Tell us about yourself, Silindile
I am a development practitioner who has devoted the last 14 years to working with vulnerable communities, with a focus on children's wellbeing. I believe that even if my efforts only save one life, at least some form of transformation is taking place. I find joy in seeing lives transformed for the better. Why did you decide to become an MSF donor?
I can connect to being in need of basic necessities because of my background, which was one of lack and poverty. This is why I resolved in my heart that I will give whatever God has blessed me with to help make a difference in people’s lives, even if it is just one person.
What health matters particularly interest you?
I am passionate about everything that concerns women and children's health. This is because women and children continue to be among the most marginalised and vulnerable groups in society today. I believe that society has a duty to look after these groups. What sort of society are we building if we don't address the health concerns that affect children, who represent the future? How important do you think the role of the community is in taking ownership of healthcare?
First and foremost, everyone should be in charge of and take responsibility for the affairs of their health. Taking ownership will encourage responsible behaviour and actions. This will also impact the programmes and interventions that are brought to the communities since community members will have a say in what needs to be done, and how it should be done. They can also participate in monitoring impact so as to yield the desired impact. What would you say to new donors or people considering donating to convince them to become long-term MSF supporters?
Your contribution is a gift of life. You are enabling someone to see another day and, hopefully, impact the lives of others around them. No amount is too little to donate! The ongoing support of Silindile and other donors like you allows us to provide impartial medical care and to remain reactive to healthcare emergencies in over 70 countries worldwide.
